Telemark skiing, for the uninitiated, is the traditional form of skiing, introduced back in the mid 19th century by Sondre Norheim “the father of modern skiing” – it differs from Alpine skiing in that the heel of the boot is not secured to the ski. Telemark skiing is all about getting into the mountains and enjoying the true “ALL MOUNTAIN” experience – using modern equipment the modern free-heel skier is able to enjoy the mountains in the relaxing holiday atmosphere of the piste AND the adventurous seclusion of the backcountry away from the crowds.
The sport of telemark skiing has been on the increase over the last 10 years as a result of developments in telemark ski, boot and binding technology. As such the sport is experiencing somewhat of a cult following with skiers of all ages and backgrounds, from the leather-boot-skinny-ski-backcountry-tourers to freestyle-free-ride-gurus in resort and the-average-alpine-skier who just wants a challenge; desperate to understand where the joy of SLIDING all began.
This has been especially so since the further advances in technology in early 2007 by Rottefella resulted in the NTN (or New Telemark Norm) system which has enabled skiers to do away with the traditional duckbill boot – as teething problems have been ironed out over the last few years it has received favourable feedback from all sectors of the telemark skiing community. Further developments in 2014 have suggested that other manufacturers are beginning to push the technical boundaries to improve your sliding experience.

UNFORTUNATELY – due to a recent move to South Wales, where currently local skiing facilities are limited, www.telemark-skiing.co.uk is no longer able to provide telemark skiing instruction or coaching.
HOWEVER – when the snows arrive you can often find me skiing in and around the Welsh Mountains. I’m always happy to join other like minded skiers for forays into the hills when conditions are favourable.
