NORDIC WALKINGGo to Telemark Skiing
telemark-skiing.co.uk also offers Nordic Walking Instruction
Nordic Walking is one of the fastest expanding outdoor activities in Central Europe and North America and telemark-skiing.co.uk now offers individuals and groups the chance to learn Nordic Walking and improve their health and fitness regardless of age, sex or physical condition here in the Midlands.
Originating in Finland in the early 1930’s Nordic Walking started as an out of season training method for cross country skiers. However in the early 1980’s it developed into the recreational physical activity that we know today becoming one of the most popular physical activities in Finland – renowned for its ability to assist weight loss, improve fitness levels, increase endurance and improve mental well being.
The International Nordic Walking Association (INWA) was established in 2000 to develop and promote the sport through the training of instructors at all levels. INWA promotes Nordic Walking as a healthy physical activity by using high quality products and the products of leading industrial and institutional partners.
Nordic Walking is more effective than conventional walking because the use of poles increases the efficiency of rotation of the upper body and activates muscles in the neck, shoulders and back. As such Nordic Walking increases mobility in neck and spine and reduces the load on knees and other joints. When compared to regular walking energy consumption with Nordic Walking can also increase by as much as 46% despite the perceived exertion being no higher than when walking without poles.Practiced for relatively long periods Nordic Walking classes are usually 1 – 2 hours long and include specific dynamic warming up exercises using the poles prior to setting off and static stretches afterwards.
Nordic Walking can be divided into three distinct levels;
Health – low intensity / for those new to regular physical activity
Fitness – a total body workout with an emphasis on developing the technique
Sport – for well trained athletes looking for a new challenge
The poles used in Nordic Walking are lightweight being made of carbon composite materials. This ensures that vibrations are kept to a minimum and that flexibility and durability is ensured. The addition of ergonomically designed grips and wrist straps enables maximum transfer of effort during the push phase whilst an asphalt paw ensures the poles work equally as well on soft ground and hard surfaces.
